Lament of the Craftsman’s Wife

Come downstairs with me and I’ll give you a gander
At jig saw and band saw and electrical sander

These are the tools for my dear husband’s hobby
Say, isn’t this lamp that he’s fashioning nobby?

All that it needs is just one coat of stain,
(Oh, yes, ma’am, the basement’s my husband’s domain.)

Here are some bunk beds he’s made for the boys;
They just need a guardrail. . . . And look at the toys –

Donkeys and elephants waiting for paint.
(Aren’t wooden animals ever so quaint!)

Much painstaking effort it took to produce
This ladder-back chair nearly ready for use;

It’s all peg construction – isn’t it neat?
A thorough wax rub-down will see it complete.

Oh, yes, Jim’s as clever as sin with his hands,
Possessing the patience his hobby demands.

But the pride I once shared in his craft has diminished –
Not one of the things he’s begun has been finished!
